Planning Policy - Development Plans
The Development Plans
Team is responsible for the development of planning policy in South
Staffordshire. Working with colleagues in other areas, the
Development Plans section contributes to the Council’s corporate
aims and objectives in improving the environment and shaping the
places where we live.
The Development Plan
The Council has a statutory duty to
prepare a development plan, which provides the planning framework
for all new development in South Staffordshire. The
Development Plan for South Staffordshire comprises the current
adopted Local Plan, the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Structure
Plan and the West Midlands
Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS). The
development plan must also be consistent with National Policy and
further details can be found on the Communities and Local
Government website.
The Government introduced
changes to the planning system in 2004 when the Planning and
Compulsory Purchase Act came into force. Under the Act, Local
Plans and Structure Plans will be replaced by a new system of Local
Development Frameworks. The South Staffordshire Local Development
Framework (LDF) will be made up of a number of separate
documents, which collectively will guide development in the
District. As and when the Council adopts documents in the
LDF, they will supersede policies in the adopted Local Plan.
