Dog Warden Scheme

Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 your Council has a statutory duty to deal with stray dogs and this is undertaken by its Environmental Health (Commercial) Services Unit.

Every effort is made to respond to all reports regarding stray dogs on the same day they are recorded.

When a Stray Dog is Caught

Where the owner of a stray dog can be contacted, it will normally be returned directly by the Dog Warden. So, as well as being a legal requirement, it pays to have your pet readily identifiable, either by a collar and tag, or, microchip - just in case you lose it.
If we cannot contact or identify the owner or, where a dog is repeatedly allowed to stray, it will be taken to Birmingham Dogs Home at Sunnyside Kennels, who can be contacted on 01902 790618.

Payment of Fees

Payment of a statutory fee of £25, plus the cost of its accommodation and any veterinary charges incurred, is required, before any stray is released from the kennels to its owner.

Duration of Kennelling

Stray dogs have to be kept for 7 clear days prior to disposal. But Birmingham Dogs Home, will do everything they can to avoid having to have an animal put down. After 7 days, however, the dog may be re-homed and not, therefore, recoverable by its previous owner.

Keeping a Stray Dog

In some cases it is possible for a person who finds a stray dog to keep it. For further information please contact our Environmental Health (Commercial) Services, on the number below, to discuss the appropriate arrangements.

To Report a Stray Dog

During office hours, 8:45am - 5:00pm (Monday to Friday), calls to report a stray dog should be made to the council offices on (01902) 696310.

Outside of office hours (see above) an independent call centre will receive all calls on (01384) 215863.
