Smoke Free Staffordshire

Smoke Free Staffordshire is a partnership between Local
Authorities and Primary Care Trusts to promote Smoke Free Places in
the County.
The partnership aims to reduce the number of people who breathe
in second hand smoke by reducing the number of people who smoke and
by promoting smoke free buildings and business.
South Staffordshire Council will assist you with gaining free
publicity when you gain your award and place you on our website
with other business who are also smoke free.
Second Hand Smoke
A key part of tackling the health risks of smoking is
protecting smokers and non-smokers from tobacco smoke. Breathing
people’s tobacco smoke (also known as second hand, passive smoking
or environmental tobacco smoke) is a hazard and unpleasant.
What is second-hand smoke?
- It is the breathing in of other people’s cigarette smoke?
- It is made up of “side stream” smoke from the burning cigarette
and “mainstream” smoke exhaled by the smoker
- You might hear second-hand smoke also referred to as passive
smoking and environmental tobacco. Second hand smoke is a health
hazard and there is nothing passive about breathing in this
smoke.
- It is a major source of indoor air pollution.
What does second-hand smoke contain?
Second-hand smoke contains five regulated hazardous air
pollutants, 47 regulated hazardous waste, more than 100 chemical
poisons and more than 50 known or suspected cancer causing agents.

South Staffordshire Council can now help local business in the
following ways:
- give you information about the effects of breathing in other
people's tobacco smoke;
- provide survey forms to help businesses assess the
attitudes of staff and customers to smoke-free policies;
- help you achieve a Smoke-free Staffordshire Awar
- give you free publicity and ideas for your own events
- provide details of local free stop-smoking support
- help you produce your own smoke-free policy.
Smoke Free Staffordshire Awards
- This Award has three levels to allow businesses to
progress gradually towards becoming smoke free depending on your
current status.
- The Silver award is for businesses that
have separate smoking and non-smoking areas and a written policy on
smoking.
- The Gold award is for businesses that are
smoke-free except for a completely separate smoking room.
Businesses must also have a written no-smoking policy which
includes details of local stop smoking support.
- The Platinum award is for businesses that are
completely smoke-free and have a written smoke-free policy
which includes details of local stop smoking support.
