Your Council, through its
Environmental Health (Commercial ) Services Unit, is responsible
for the enforcement of health and safety standards at over 1500
commercial premises throughout South Staffordshire. These include
premises used for warehousing, retail, office, sporting and
leisure, hotels, catering, residential accommodation and consumer
services.
It is the responsibility of all
employers to ensure that adequate provision is made for the health,
safety and welfare of their employees, and also for others who may
be affected by their operations (e.g. customers, clients etc).
Their responsibilities include providing a safe place of work and
ensuring safe systems of work; having equipment and tools that are
safe to use; providing information regarding materials used on the
premises and training employees in the safe use of such materials
and equipment.
It is part of the function of our
Health and Safety Team, to give advise to operators of businesses
on their responsibilities and how they can best comply with legal
requirements. If you are about to open a new business, or, simply
unsure of what your legal duties are, why not contact us to seek
further advice, or take advantage of the wide range of information
leaflets we have available, free of charge.
Inspections of business
activities are normally undertaken unannounced and in accordance
with a risk based programme, but we also investigate accidents and
complaints received from employees or members of the public. If you
are concerned about health and safety issues at your workplace, or
at premises you have visited, please let us know, so that further
investigations can be undertaken.

topics may be obtained through the links provided below.
There are no charges for making enquiries, requesting advice or
reporting problems with regard to our Occupational Health and
Safety Service.
