A licence is required, under the Pet Animals Act 1951, for
premises that are used for the sale of pet animals.
It is an offence to operate a pet shop without a valid
licence, or, in non-compliance with conditions attached to any
licence issued.
Applications for new licences can take two months to
process because of consultations that may have to take place with
emergency services and/or enforcement authorities.
Applications for renewal are normally processed within 20 working
days and, if continuity of the licensed status is to be maintained,
therefore, such applications need to be made at least one month
before the expiry of any existing licence.
Licences last from the date of issue until 31st December,
unless previously revoked. Applications should be made
at least one calendar month before the date of expiry of an
existing licence to qualify for the lower cost of renewing that
licence.
Premises will always be inspected before a licence is issued
for the first time and inspections to assess compliance with
licence conditions may be made at any time thereafter - not just at
the time of application for renewal.
If you are thinking of setting up a business involving the
sale of pet animals, you should discuss your proposals with one of
our licensing officers (see contact details below), before
incurring any expenditure.
Erection of additional facilities, or, changing the use of
existing premises may require prior approval under Town and Country
Planning Acts and/or Building Regulations.
