Registration of Hairdressers and Barbers

Registration is required, under the Staffordshire Act 1983, for premises that are used for the purpose of a hairdresser or barbers undertaking.

It is an offence to operate as a hairdresser or barber without a valid registration, or, in non-compliance with the bye-laws attached to any registration issued.

Applications for registration can take two months to process because of consultations that may have to take place with emergency services and/or enforcement authorities.

Premises will always be inspected before a registration certificate is issued and inspections to assess compliance with the bye-laws may be made at any time thereafter.

If you are thinking of setting up a business involving hairdressing or as a barber, you should discuss your proposals with one of our licensing officers (see contact details below), before incurring any expenditure.

Erection of additional facilities, or, changing the use of existing premises may require prior approval under Town and Country Planning Acts and/or Building Regulations.

Application forms and further information, including the bye-laws that may be applied to registration of hairdressers and barbers are provided in the links below.
