The Planning Portal is the first
point of call for anyone who wants to find out about the
planning system in England and Wales. It is aimed at everyone, from
central government and local authorities to planning professionals
and the lay person.
You can also specify a location on
the Planning Portal. This allows you to view certain information
specifically designed for your area as well as giving you local
contacts which you can use to gain further information. You can
also try searching the Portal for the information you
require.

Your application can either be
created online using The Planning Portal (see link), or it can be
created as a traditional paper based application.
There are significant benefits to
applying online including the automatic submission of all forms,
plans and other attached documents direct to our planning
department, and the ability to pay for your application over the
telephone.
There are a
number of different application forms for various types of
development proposal, including; General Applications (the most
commonly used) , Advertisements, Householder, Listed Building
Consent, Conservation Area Consents, Hazardous Substances Consent
and Certificates of Lawful Use or Development.

The householder form can be used for
most domestic applications and is fairly straightforward to
complete. You will need to send in four copies of the
application forms and of the detailed plans to show what is
involved. These should include layout plans showing existing
buildings and trees, roads and other access: the location of the
proposed development on the site and details of other features such
as the external materials to be used.
Every planning application needs a
site location plan and block plan showing the location and
boundaries of the site you are planning to work on. You can use the
Planning Portal's 'Buy a Plan' service (see link) to ensure that
you meet our requirements, whether you are a planning professional
or first-time applicant.
Location plans can
also be purchased from the Ordnance Survey (see link) or from
the National Map Centre (see link). However if you are applying
online using the planning portal then this can be automatically
generated as a part of the process.
The purpose of this plan is to
assist Planning Officers, Councillors and all other interested
parties in identifying the exact boundaries of the application
site.
Failure to provide the correct and
necessary information will mean your application cannot be
registered. It will be delayed until sufficient copies of all the
required documents have been provided. All plans have to be to
scale and in metric.
The Government requires that a fee
has to be paid with most applications; the amount varies according
to the size and type of development proposed. The level of fees is
set by the Government, not the Council. The fees apply nationally
and are updated every few years. The current level of fees is shown

All applications have to be
accompanied by a certificate of ownership confirming either that
you are the owner, whether the land is part of an agricultural
holding, and, if you aren't the owner that you have told the owner
that you have made an application. The certificate can be
