What Is Council Tax?
Council Tax is a local tax set and collected by
South Staffordshire District Council to help pay for local services
provided by South Staffordshire District Council, Staffordshire
County Council, Staffordshire Police Authority, Stoke on Trent and
Staffordshire Fire Authority and Parish Councils. Like any general
tax it is payable by any liable person whether or not any
particular service is used.
Who Has To Pay Council Tax?
There will normally be one bill per dwelling,
whether it is a house, bungalow, flat, maisonette, mobile home or
houseboat and whether it is owned or rented. In most circumstances,
the occupier of a property will be responsible for the payments.
All joint owners, tenants or occupiers of a property can be
responsible for payment of the Council Tax bill, as can couples who
are married or live together as husband and wife. If the bill is
not paid, the Council may take action to collect the money from any
or all persons responsible for payment. In some cases, such as
hostels or unoccupied properties, the owner will become the liable
person. If you believe your name should not be on the bill,
e.g.change of address, please tell us as soon as possible.
