Voting in an Election
How do I vote?

You need to be registered in order
to vote.
Who can vote?
You're allowed to vote if:
- you're 18 or over
- you're a British, Commonwealth, Irish and
other European Union citizen
- you're a member of the armed forces - or
their spouse
- you're a crown servant employed outside the
United Kingdom*
- a UK citizen based
overseas**
* crown servants
and european citizens are only allowed to vote in European and
local elections.
** overseas
electors are only allowed to vote in Parliamentary and European
elections.
Shortly before an election everyone in your home who is
eligible to vote will receive a poll card.
The poll card will tell you:
You don't need to take the poll card with you
to be able to vote.
If you're a permanent postal voter, you won't receive a poll
card - but you will receive a pre-poll information pack
telling you when your ballot papers will arrive and when you
need to return them.

- Polls open at 7am and close at 10pm.
- When you arrive at your polling station
you'll be asked to confirm your name and address and we will then
give you a ballot paper.
- You can then take the ballot
paper(s) to the voting booth and mark with a "X" the candidate
you wish to vote for.
- Fold the ballot paper(s) and put it in
the ballot box.
