Abandoned Vehicles are becoming an ever-increasing problem throughout South Staffordshire.  This is due to the low value of scrap metal and the obligations of scrap metal merchants to recycle more of the components of old cars.

 

The Council has a duty to investigate and remove any motor vehicle abandoned without lawful authority on land in the open air whether private or public. If the vehicle is in a dangerous condition or burnt out, the Council will remove it.

 

Once reported, the Council will commence investigation within 24 hours. This will involve tracing the last owner of the vehicle to assess whether or not it is abandoned. Once the vehicle has been confirmed abandoned, we will endeavour to remove it within 14 days. If a vehicle is destroyed by fire, the Council will arrange for its removal within 24 hours of notification.

 

The Council will not remove illegally parked or untaxed vehicles. Nuisance vehicles should be reported to the police whilst untaxed vehicles should be reported directly to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) on 0800 325202. Alternatively, please follow the link below.

 

It is an offence not to register the sale or purchase of a vehicle with the DVLA even if bought privately. If it is not abandoned, i.e. someone is still claiming ownership, then the Council has no power to remove it. The penalty for abandoning a vehicle if found guilty is a fine of up to £2,500 and / or 3 months imprisonment.
