South Staffordshire Heat Loss Survey

South Staffordshire Council have taken a unique approach into tackling climate change, energy efficiency and fuel poverty by looking at how much heat loss is generated by each building in the district.

By taking a thermal image of every building on a cold clear night in winter, it can be seen how much heat is being lost. These images will allow residents to find their house and see how energy efficient they are.

The map on the link below shows the heat being lost from each building from bright red showing high levels of heat loss, to dark blue showing minimal heat loss.

To view the colour of any building in South Staffordshire click here to access the local view web-site, and follow the instructions below or paste this web-address into your browser.

Information about home energy efficiency and the grants available to all residents, is available on the Home Energy Savings page, or can be found by contacting the local Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre on 0800 512 012. If you are over 70, or on an income related benefit cavity wall and loft insulation measures are free. There may also be up to £3,500 available to help upgrade heating systems.

What do the colours mean?

The colours shown on the map show the heat loss from each building on a colour range from bright red (high heat loss) to dark blue (minimal heat loss).

Thermal image

It should be stressed, however, that the image only provides a snapshot of heat loss on one particular night. It is worth remembering when looking at your property that there could be other reasons for a property apparently losing no heat, e.g. it could be there was no heating on at the time the image was taken or the occupants were away.

The survey was conducted in March 2008 so any improvements made after this date will not be included.

What if my property is red?

The nearer to red your property is, the more heat is being lost through windows, doors and walls. Installing insulation measures is the best way to save energy and keep more heat in the building. Installing these measures can also save up to £350 on your energy bill.
