The UK is bound by
the European Union Directive on the Landfill of
Waste (99/31/EC) which sets mandatory targets for the
reduction of biodegradable municipal waste sent to landfill. To
help meet these requirements, the Government has established
national targets for the recovery of municipal waste and
recycling/composting of household waste. All authorities in England
have been set statutory performance standards for recycling and
composting household waste.
The national strategy, Waste Strategy for
England 2007, is available below. In addition, the
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)
website contains detailed information regarding
waste and recycling, including links to the EU Directive on
the Landfill of Waste.
At the regional level, the Staffordshire Joint Waste Management
Board (JWMB) incorporates Staffordshire County Council,
Stoke-on-Trent City Council and the eight districts/boroughs within
Staffordshire. Full details of the Joint Municipal
Waste Management Strategy can be viewed below. A link is
also available to the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent
Joint Waste Core Strategy which sets out a 15 year vision
of how waste will be treated and disposed of in the
County.
Adopted in 2009, the South Staffordshire Council Waste
Strategy can be viewed by selecting the link
