Conservation Areas
The Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act
1990, which consolidates previous legislation, requires local
authorities to identify and designate as conservation areas "areas
of special architectural or historic interest, the character or
appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance".
Conservation area designation reflects not only the value of
individual buildings and their settings, but also their collective
contribution to the character of an area, together with other
elements such as open spaces and trees. Conservation areas may also
comprise historic parklands and features of industrial heritage
such as the canals.
The designation of an area as a conservation area is only a
preliminary step. The Council encourages proposals for the
preservation and enhancement of conservation areas. These proposals
could include such measures as the relief of traffic congestion,
provision of off-street parking and other environmental improvement
works, and the production of conservation area appraisals.
The distinctive nature of many villages and other historic
areas in South Staffordshire is recognised by sixteen conservation
areas. These are:
- Blymhill
- Brewood
- Chillington
- Codsall & Oaken
- Enville
- Himley
- Kinver
- Lapley
- Lower Penn
- Pattingham
- Penkridge
- Penn (Vicarage Road)
- Trysull & Seisdon
- Weston-under-Lizard
- Wheaton Aston
- Wombourne
There are also conservation areas along the Staffordshire
& Worcestershire, Stourbridge, and the Shropshire Union
canals.
These conservation area were designated between 1969 and 1983,
with alterations made to the Himley Conservation Area boundary in
1997. Since conservation areas have been designated, many
settlements have grown and in some cases this growth has had a
significant effect on the character of some conservation areas. It
is, therefore, necessary to keep the boundaries of conservation
areas under review and to consider possible amendments to these
boundaries.
Conservation Area Management Plans &
Appraisals
Following a successful pilot study of the Trysull Conservation
Area a further 11 of the District's conservation areas have been
reappraised and full Management Plans produced and adopted for
them. These can be viewed or downloaded on line at
