Community Testing In South Staffordshire

Released on 21 October 2020

South Staffordshire council news

South Staffordshire has seen a surge in coronavirus cases over the past few weeks, and we all need to do everything we can to stop it in its tracks. One of the ways we can do this is by finding out how much the virus is circulating in the local community. We do this by testing people who aren't currently showing any symptoms of COVID-19.

Since September 1, around 400 people have tested positive for the virus and cases are continuing to rise.

There has been no one single source of infection as transmissions have been identified within and between households, care homes, schools and businesses.

The Government has announced further restrictions for parts of the country and unless South Staffordshire turns the situation around, we too could soon face tougher measures that will affect peoples lives and livelihoods.

To bring the rate of cases down, people are being urged to strictly folow the national rules and do what they can in their local communities to help reduce the spread of the infection.

Additional testing is being made available to try and identify people who may have been infected.

We are calling on the residents of Essington and Great Wyrley to help us with this work by getting testing if you don't currently have any symptoms. Testing is quick and free and taking place in your area on Thursday 22nd October and Saturday 24th October at:

  • Great Wyrley Scout and Guide Centre, Walsall Road, Great Wyrley - Thursday 22nd October 4.30pm-6.30pm
  • Essington Community Centre, Hobnock Road  - Saturday 24th October 10am-2pm
  • Great Wyrley Scout and Guide Centre, Walsall Road, Great Wyrley - Saturday 24th October 10am-2pm

100 appointments are available for the Thursday afternoon and a further 200 appointments for each of the Saturday locations are available but they must be booked in advance here:

If you cannot make your appointment please remember to cancel so that someone else can have your slot.

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, please do not attend this testing. You must stay at home and book a test through the national portal at or by calling 119. If positive, you must stay in for 10 days. Anybody who you have been in close contact with must self-isolate for 14 days.
