Council Tax Empty Property Discounts
Released on 10 July 2019
The Council like all other local authorities have the power to set local Council Tax discounts (which can be up to 100%) in respect of some classes of empty property. South Staffordshire Council currently applies discounts to the following classes of property:
- Properties which are unoccupied and substantially unfurnished. These properties are currently eligible for a 100% discount from the Council Tax charge for up to a maximum period of 3 months.
- Unoccupied and unfurnished properties which are undergoing major structural repairs or alterations; Currently these properties receive 100% discount from Council Tax for up to 12 months when they require, or are undergoing, major structural repair works or alterations.
- Properties which are unoccupied and substantially unfurnished for over 2 years. The council charges a premium of 50% on top of the full Council Tax charge if a property has been empty for at least 2 years (i.e. a charge of 150% of the applicable Council Tax).
South Staffordshire Council considers empty properties to be a wasted resource, both for its owner and for someone in need of housing. Analysis has shown that the number of empty properties in the District has been stubbornly high for a number of years. Changes to the Council Tax discounts are intended to encourage owners to bring empty homes back into use to provide homes that people need.
This year the Council has decided that changes should be made to the level of discounts and premiums awarded to empty properties and we are keen to hear your views on the proposed changes. Have your say by completing the survey below.
