Safety warning over smoke alarm 'failure' rate

Released on 2 December 2019

South Staffordshire council news

Further coverage of LGA analysis of official figures shows that almost 40 per cent of battery-powered smoke alarms failed to activate in house fires in England in the last year – a figure that has remained virtually unchanged in nearly a decade. The LGA is urging householders to test their smoke alarms regularly, but especially during the run-up to Christmas when festive decorations, candles and lighting pose a potentially greater fire risk, and to fit more than one smoke detector in their homes, with at least one fitted on the ceiling of every floor.
