Discretionary Top-up to local business grant funds scheme

Released on 19 May 2020

South Staffordshire council news

Thank you for your enquiry in relation to accessing discretionary grant funding available via South Staffordshire Council.

On 2 May 2020 Government first announced that a national discretionary fund (of £617 million) would been set up to accommodate certain small businesses previously outside the scope of the business grant funds scheme. This announcement stated:

  • that the additional fund would be aimed at businesses with ongoing fixed property-related costs and that businesses must be small, under 50 employees, and able to demonstrate that they have seen a significant drop of income due to Coronavirus restriction measures.
  • that the allocation of funding would be at the discretion of local authorities
  • that further guidance for local authorities would be issued.

Some further guidance has since been recently issue to us by Government – including the amount available to this district which is estimated at £900,000.

The Council is now in the process of establishing the arrangements for allocating this funding in South Staffordshire (including the precise criteria and evidence requirements) in order to ensure that these funds are distributed in fair, consistent and transparent way.

As soon as these arrangements are confirmed they will be published on the Council web-site.
