An array of guests turned out to celebrate the official opening of South Staffordshire Council's new award-winning Community Hub.

VIPs, local politicians, businesses and more attended the event at the Codsall-based headquarters, taking tours around the building and witnessing the progress made during the building's 18-month-long inception.

The Hub received a Gold Award by national awards body iESE – the chief executive of which, following the ceremony, described South Staffordshire Council as setting a 'global benchmark'.

Cost neutral to the taxpayer, the Wolverhampton Road building is not only occupied by South Staffordshire Council, but also Staffordshire Police, Staffordshire County Council, Citizen's Advice, and a total of 28 tenants.

It also boasts a café, library, Russel House GP surgery, meeting rooms, offices and more.

Leader of the council, Councillor Roger Lees, said: “We made the bold decision to continue with this project against the backdrop of uncertainty that came with the pandemic two years ago – and thank goodness we did.

“It has turned out even better than expected. We are immensely proud of the building and it has been a labour of love – from concept to completion.

“Not only is the Community Hub a wonderful asset for our residents, but it brings resources closer to our communities. This includes Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire County Council, and new businesses which we have been able to give a home to within the Business Hub, bringing additional, new services to the communities of South Staffordshire.

“This is truly a community-centric space, which is available to the public for a wide range of uses, from conferences to training seminars - or to simply have a coffee in the new café."

Guests at the opening event included Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire Ian Dudson – who formally opened the building; MP Sir Gavin Williamson; Alex Morley, the One Public Estate Programme Director; and the family of former leader Councillor Brian Edwards MBE.

Chairman of the council, Councillor Matt Ewart, said: “We are all immensely proud of Codsall Community Hub and it particularly resonates with me being the local ward member as well as chairman of the council.

“This project was brought in on time and in budget - and most impressively, the project is cost neutral to the tax-paying public.

“An award-winning project doesn't just happen by chance.  It takes hard work, commitment and dedication, so I would like to thank all that have played their part."

The opening event took place shortly after the iconic Queen's Baton Relay passed through Codsall – before stopping off at the Hub – and following the unveiling of a chainsaw-carved wooden memorial sculpture honouring the late former South Staffordshire Council Leader Councillor Brian Edwards.

Codsall Community Hub was developed with the support of One Public Estate, a partnership between the Office of Government Property in the Cabinet Office, the Local Government Association and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.
