Walking festival gets underway

Released on 16 May 2019

South Staffordshire council news

The popular South Staffordshire Walking Festival is back and runs for the next three months until Tuesday 30 July 2019.

No matter whether you're a stroller, someone with medical problems or a super fit marcher, this walking festival has something for everyone and contains a selection of 18 walks that cater for all abilities and interests.

New for this year is a Nordic Walking taster session, suitable for everyone and with the added benefits of toning the upper and lower body and burning up to 46% more calories than ordinary walking.

The selection of walks ranges from easy strolls to more challenging routes, which celebrate the wonderful scenery, wildlife and history of South Staffordshire. There are nature and country walks in Kinver, Wombourne, Coven and Great Wyrley, with one walk following the route of the old Great Wyrley/Essington Canal, another the River Penk, and another including a tour of Pendeford Nature Reserve led by the warden.

Louise Colman, Walking for Health Co-ordinator who organises the walking festival with the support of South Staffordshire Council, said, “This is a brilliant event giving everyone the chance to get outdoors more and see South Staffordshire at its best and showcasing just some of the great walking opportunities you can enjoy in our local community.

“The festival is free of charge and all of our walks are led by trained walk leaders. There's no need to register for the walks apart from the Nordic Walking taster sessions which do need to be booked in advance. For the other walks, simply turn up 10 minutes before the walk is scheduled to start. The walking festival really is the perfect excuse to kick-start an active lifestyle and we also co-ordinate a regular programme of walks that take place throughout the year."
