South Staffordshire ready for a right royal celebration

Released on 16 May 2022

South Staffordshire is preparing to paint the town red, white and blue as residents across the district gear up for a right royal celebration this summer.

Thousands are set to take part in occasions marking The Queen's Platinum Jubilee, with a total of 33 functions granted more than £17,600 in funding from South Staffordshire Council's Community Innovation Fund from money raised through the South Staffordshire Community Lottery.

Coinciding with the date of the Trooping the Colour event at London's Whitehall, Lower Penn is hosting a Platinum Jubilee Tea Party at its Victory Hall on June 2.

June 3, meanwhile, will not only see the Service of Thanksgiving for The Queen's Reign take place at St Paul's Cathedral in the capital, but also a range of events locally – including a street party in Bilbrook and a Celebration Music Concert in Wombourne.

And while the Platinum Party at the Palace takes place at Buckingham Palace on June 4, the district will mark the occasion with a street party in Market Lane, Lower Penn; celebrations in Great Wyrley; a Platinum Jubilee Fun Day in Huntington; the Bobbington Jubilee Bash; and the Platinum Jubilee Commemorative Event at Swindon.

On June 5, as The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Pageant is held in the streets surrounding Buckingham Palace, two Picnic in the Park events will take place in Codsall and Kinver, plus a 'Big Lunch' event in Dunston, a Jubilee Party at Swindon Over 60s Club, The Wheaton Aston Community Big Jubilee Lunch and more.

Leader of South Staffordshire Council, Councillor Roger Lees, said: “We are delighted to have been able to support this huge range of events for our residents thanks to the South Staffordshire Community Lottery.

“This is going to be an incredible, landmark summer for the nation and the district – and we very much look forward to seeing our residents get together after a turbulent few years to mark such a joyous occasion."

There are also further celebrations taking place on June 11, 15, 18, and 25, as well as in July, August, September, and December. See the calendar for more information.

South Staffordshire Council has also received 18 applications for street closures to allow for Jubilee celebrations. Those listed on the calendar are only those which have received funding from South Staffordshire Council.
