South Staffordshire council news

Today, a record number of parks and green spaces collect a Green Flag Award including Baggeridge Country Park and the Wom Brook Walk in Wombourne, South Staffordshire.

They are among a record-breaking 1,970 UK parks and green spaces and 131 in 13 other countries around the world receiving a prestigious Green Flag Award - the mark of a quality park or green space. This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

Both Baggeridge Country Park and the Wom Brook Walk are maintained by South Staffordshire Council. With an estimated 150,000 visitors enjoying the 152 acres of parkland every year, Baggeridge Country Park is immensely popular and even online its regular wildlife and nature posts on Facebook have attracted an eager audience with over 7,000 likes. The Wom Brook Walk follows the Wom Brook stream and it is a popular walk and designated local nature reserve which stretches for about one and a half miles. Visitors can get up close to nature and see wildlife including woodpeckers, kingfishers, dippers and even water voles.

Councillor Len Bates BEM, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said, “We are absolutely delighted to receive two Green Flag Awards once again. We know how much quality green spaces matter to our residents and visitors, and these awards celebrate the hard work and dedication of Council staff and all the volunteers who work throughout the year to maintain and protect these beautiful green spaces. Last year, Baggeridge Country Park celebrated winning a Green Flag Award for the twentieth year running and this year marks the tenth year for the Wom Brook Walk - a wonderful achievement."

Paul Todd, International Green Flag Award scheme manager, said, “It's fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners. Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement."
