Business continuity management

Having a Business Continuity Management Plan in place should enable you to continue to provide your service or business should something happen to the the normal day to day provision.

What does a Business Continuity Management plan look like?

It highlights all the critical parts of your business/service and the impact on the business/service should you not be able to operate eg major flooding of your building

How do I write a plan?

  • Identify your critical (must do) elements of your business/services for normal day to day operation
  • Identify who is responsible for ensuring day to day operations continue
  • Identify the impact of not being able to operate normally
  • Identify alternative ways of operating where possible

Who should be involved in writing the plan?

  • key stakeholders – such as staff/board members
  • seek advice from customers/suppliers – what are their expectations?

How do I test the plan?

  • Run a desk-top exercise simulating different scenarios that could impact on your ability to operate your normal day to day business/service
  • Run a simulation of an incident that would enable you to see it from different points of view and record the learning from this
