Clean air is essential to good quality of life. People should expect that the air they breathe won't harm them.
Air pollution occurs when air has become contaminated with chemicals or substances not normally associated with the natural composition of the air for that particular area.
Air quality in South Staffordshire is generally very good. Our main source of air pollution comes from road vehicles and to a lesser extent, from industry. Currently
There is currently one air quality management area (AQMA) within the district where the levels of air pollution have been historically close to the air quality limit. This is:
- AQMA 5 – The A5 at Oak Farm, Hatherton
Currently, and over the past few years the air quality within Oak Farm air quality management area has been within objective level.
The Council's Air Quality Action Plan 2008, sets out the measures being used to tackle pollution in the area.
The Action Plan is in the process of being updated to reflect the changes and updates in monitoring over the district along with the number of AQMA's currently within our district which has reduced in recent years due to improvements in the air quality in those areas.
We monitor pollution levels and compare them to limits set by the government and produce reports for DEFRA each year:
