Biodiversity 

The word biodiversity means “the variety of living things". It refers to both the variety of life and how it all connects together. The protection of biodiversity is important for lots of reasons, such as: 

• Biodiversity provides us with food, fresh air, clean water, medicines and insects that pollinate our crops – these are known as ‘ecological services' 
• A green and healthy environment is good for our physical and mental wellbeing 

Many species of plants and animals are decreasing in the UK and all over the world, so it is more important than ever that we conserve and enhance what is left. 

Local Nature Reserves

Local Nature Reserves (LNRs)  are designated areas that are important for both biodiversity and local communities. 

They are valuable resources that give people the chance to experience the natural world on their doorstep. They provide an ideal opportunity to study and learn about nature or simply to enjoy it. 

In recent years, many habitats and species in the UK have come under threat and LNRs make an important contribution in helping to protect and enhance the UK's biodiversity. As the designation of an LNR is a statutory declaration, they are a very clear signal of our commitment to nature conservation. 

The Council currently manages 5 LNR sites: 

• The Wyrley Branch of the Wyrley Essington Canal which runs from Broad Lane in Essington to Dundalk Lane in Cheslyn Hay 
• Wom Brook Walk in Wombourne 
• Shoal Hill Common on the B5012 between Cannock and Penkridge 
• Baggeridge Country Park in Himley 
• Kingswinford Railway Walk covering Wombourne, Himley and Lower Penn
