Advice for Volunteers

Advice for Volunteers:

Volunteers are key to helping the most vulnerable in our local communities, but if you are volunteering please make sure you stay safe too.

Guidance on Coronavirus: How to help safely

If you are helping with shopping and prescriptions, remember to:

  • Drop the shopping at the door and wait at least 6 ft away to check if the resident collects it.
  • Avoid handling cash if possible, advise the resident to pay by card either online or over the phone – if you have to handle cash, ask the resident to place the cash on the door step, ideally in an envelope if they have one
  • Repeat the same door step process with prescriptions/medications
  • Wear gloves for all deliveries to resident's homes, but they must be changed and disposed of after each household visit.
  • DO NOT touch your face.
  • Cleanse your hands with sanitising gel and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds as soon as you can.

If you are dog walking ask the resident to wipe the dog's paws after your return.

Dementia Toolkit for Coronavirus Volunteers:

With so many people living with dementia needing the support of their communities during this period, it is important that those offering their time are more aware of what it is like to live with dementia, and the action they can take to support those living with the condition.
