Register a food business
Food Premises Registration
It is required by law to register a food establishment (Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs, Article 6(2). Premises include restaurants, cafes, hotels, shops, canteens, market stalls, mobile catering vans, food delivery vans and businesses run from home.
If you run a food business intermittently, you must notify us about any premises you use for:-
d) preparing food
Anyone starting a new food business must register with us at least 28 days before starting to trade.
You need to register with us so that we have up-to-date information on your food premises so that we can visit them when we need to.
Food registration is not a form of licensing and does not give approval to trade.
There is a penalty fine of up to £5000 for not registering your food business.

Approval of Premises
There are certain types of businesses that will need to be ‘Approved' by us. If you intend to operate a business that manufactures or processes meat, meat products including minced meat, fish or fishery products including shellfish, milk, dairy products and collagen then you will need to be approved by us first. A food business that needs "Approval" will not be able to start trading until they have been granted approval.
Processing & Timescales for Food Premises Registration
If the application is satisfactory you will be added to the Food Database and an inspection of the business undertaken in due course. We will only contact you if there is a problem with your application.
Validity & Renewals
Registration will remain in force until either the business stops trading or registration is cancelled.
Notify us of any change in circumstances i.e. change of name, cease trading etc. ·
