Supporting our village centres – Village Centre Network project

To ensure these centres continue to thrive, South Staffordshire Council is leading on the creation of Village Centre Networks

Here in South Staffordshire, we are proud of our vibrant village centres, each with its own character, history, and community spirit. From independent shops and cafés to local services and hospitality, our villages play a vital role in daily life.

We want to make sure these centres continue to thrive. That’s why we are creating Village Centre Networks (VCNs) – bringing local businesses together to share ideas, collaborate, and shape the future of our village centres.

Why Village Centre Networks?

In 2023, we carried out an appraisal of eight village centres – Bilbrook, Codsall, Penkridge, Perton, Wombourne, Kinver, Great Wyrley, and Brewood.

The findings highlighted strengths in each location, but also opportunities for growth. A key recommendation was the need to form business-led clusters in every centre. These groups give local businesses a stronger voice, encourage collaboration, and provide peer support. While some villages already have groups in place, others do not – and that’s where this project comes in.

What we will deliver

This project is being delivered by independent consultant Alison Duckworth of Epona Marketing. With support from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), we are:

  • Engaging with businesses and stakeholders in each village centre
  • Facilitating new and existing business networks
  • Supporting businesses with advice, referrals, and opportunities to collaborate
  • Encouraging destination marketing and activities that bring communities together
  • Helping to safeguard the long-term sustainability of our village centres

Building stronger village centres

By connecting businesses, sharing expertise, and creating a stronger collective voice, we can boost trade, attract visitors, and ensure our village centres continue to thrive as the heart of their communities.
