South Staffordshire – a film-friendly district
South Staffordshire is made up of 27 parishes ranging from small hamlets to large villages, each with their own distinctive character set in attractive countryside. With its rich legacy of notable buildings, historic parklands and gardens plus landscapes with conservation areas, South Staffordshire provides a range of locations for filming and photography. Most locations are less than an hour's drive from the city of Wolverhampton and easily accessible from the M54, M6 and the train line.
Filmmaking and photography in South Staffordshire
- Parks and open land...
There are 13 historic parklands and gardens in South Staffordshire and those at Chillington, Enville, Himley, Patshull and Weston Park are of particularly high quality. Our district therefore offers extensive areas of open land for filming and photography, including Kinver Edge, Highgate Common, Shoal Hill Common, South Staffordshire Railway Walk, the Wom Brook Walk, the Wyrley Essington Canal Linear Walk and Baggeridge Country Park.
Baggeridge Country Park alone provides multiple outdoor filming opportunities. Features includes 3 large pools, a toposcope with views into Shropshire, a large orchard, mountain bike area, trails and walks, children's play area, miniature railway, community room, high ropes adventure course, on-site teashop and extensive car parking. It's only a 10-minute drive from Wolverhampton and close by to Birmingham city centre.
- Houses and Estates...
The district has a rich legacy of historic house and buildings of local importance including Weston Park, Chillington Hall, a Georgian country house near Brewood and Himley Hall, a 18th Century building set among 180 acres of Capability Brown landscaped parkland.
- Local buildings available for filming...
Several buildings across the district are open to filming and photography. Codsall Community Hub is in the village of Codsall. Having recently undergone a £10m refurbishment and extension programme to modernise its interior facilities, the hub offers several production and filming opportunities, including large open plan offices, a modern multifunctional council chamber, meeting rooms and a lounge. There's also an onsite café and extensive car parking.
The district has provided filming locations to date for film and TV shows alike. From short documentaries such as ‘Ride on the Kinver Light Railway' to reality shows including property programme ‘To Buy or Not to Buy' have been filming across South Staffordshire since 2003. Other films include ‘Grave Peril' and ‘Distant Minded Thoughts'.
