Open spaces are classed as the Council's green spaces and can include large open areas as well as smaller narrow locations. Areas within the Council owned cemeteries and closed churchyards are also included. The cutting of the open spaces commences mid-March weather permitting and cuts are carried out every fortnight until the end of October. Grass arisings are not removed.
Open space grass cutting is carried out by two teams at the same time, one in the north of the district and one in the south. Below is the route order that this work is carried out:

Highway Verge (HV) Grass Cutting
Street Scene carry out the cutting of some Highway verges on behalf of Staffordshire County Council. These verges are within the limits of village boundaries. Currently nine cuts per year are carried out on these verges with Staffordshire County Council funding six cuts per year and South Staffordshire Council funding the remaining three. Weather permitting the cutting of the verges commences early March with two cuts being carried out during this month. Going forward cuts are then carried out monthly up until October. Grass arisings are not removed.

Meadow Grass Cutting
Meadow grass areas are those areas which are allowed to grow longer, usually for ecological interest. They are cut annually during late summer with arisings removed so that a build-up of nutrients does not occur. Some locations have a narrow swath of grass cut alongside the edges to ensure areas look neat commonly known as picture framing.
