Commenting on an application

Before you get in touch, please look at the application's plans and documents on Public Access.

Anyone can comment on a planning application that has not yet been decided.

The council can only take material considerations into account when making a decision.

For example:

  • Local and National Policy
  • Loss of light;
  • Overlooking;
  • Development density;
  • Design;
  • Traffic; or
  • Harm to trees and/or wildlife.

We cannot take into account:

  • Property values;
  • Minor disruption during construction work;
  • Technical construction details;
  • Loss of views over land you don't own;
  • The behaviour or character of anyone involved;
  • Commercial competition; and
  • Boundary disputes.

If you make comments after the consultation expiry date, we cannot guarantee that your comments will be taken into account when the application is determined.

Any correspondence will form part of the public planning file and will be published on the council's website, viewable to members of the general public.

Your name and comments will not be withheld unless requested in writing.

Comments may be redacted before they are published on the council's website to remove any personal or financial information or offensive comments.

Data Protection

The council maintains a register of planning applications and applications for tree work, which includes personal details of people who have:

  • submitted a planning application;
  • commented on a planning application;
  • submitted pre-application enquiries and hedgerow removal notices; or
  • submitted a complaint about a high hedge, together with details of the person living at the property where the hedge is growing and the person who owns the property.

To maintain this register, we collect and use personal information about you.

For more information about how we process this data, please see our Data Protection page.
